The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) just announced a new initiative to assess the state of cyber security for the electric grid. DOE has already begun tapping numerous leads from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Department of Homeland Security as well as both public and private utilities to contribute to this open forum on cyber security.

The Night Dragon is the latest cyber security attack to join the ranks of uber-sophisticated Trojans like Stuxnet. It uses one of the most common attacks, compromising external Web servers and then hacking into the company intranets to gain access to internal servers and desktops.

Unexpectedly, a glitch with their flight computers caused United Airlines to ground an entire fleet of their 757 airplanes, causing several flight delays and cancellations at the last minute. United discovered a maintenance problem with their air data computers, which monitor critical parameters such as air speed and navigation. They mandated additional operational checks on all 96 planes, putting a hold on their flight schedules until the issue was resolved.

In Arkansas this week, a fired employee has filed a lawsuit for harassment against Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. The employee, who currently resides in Oklahoma, alleges that Wal-Mart is forcing him to an Arkansas court as part of a 4-year-old trade secret violation case.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has already hosted two dozen events in their focused efforts to address the gender pay gap in America. Fortunately for employees who work in federal government, there is a higher level of equal pay in federal jobs versus private sector jobs.
As reported by Washington Postcolumnist Joe Davidson, it is the General Schedule that takes the most credit for keeping down gender-based pay disputes.

Researchers at the University of Michigan are onto something – the very first millimeter-scale computing system. Their developing prototypes for an implantable eye pressure monitor and a compact radio that needs no tuning will be have their debut at the upcoming International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.
